The dread most people have to look forward to is losing a loved one, and having to deal with their post-mortem arrangements. In today’s society, the modern day funeral home is equipped, either directly or through contacts, to take care of all the details and arrangements for handling your loved one’s last journey.
This was not the case back in the middle ages. The black plague slaughtered millions to such an extent that people would go through towns calling to “bring out your dead!” and would cart them off. Monty Python’s “Quest for the Holy Grail” gives an extremely humorous example of this.
